Palliative Massage
(student assignment written by Ann Henderson - 1995)

The Oxford dictionary defines massage as rubbing/kneading, etc. of muscles and joints of a body with the hands to stimulate their action, cure strains, etc. Massage may also be defined as the manipulation of the tissues of the body for therapeutic purposes.

The purpose of "Palliative Massage" is to give contact, comfort and relaxation to people with a terminal illness, a degenerating disease, or simply the aches and pains of an aging body. "Palliative Massage" given by a family member/loved one can be the absolute "Power of Touch". As with all massage, it can improve circulation, respiratory and digestive systems, promote healing, provide drainage of swollen limbs or help body functions that are no longer working as they should be. It smoothes muscular tensions, restores body tone and builds a supportive emotional atmosphere.

From birth, we are accustomed to being touched. The cycle can be complete with "Palliative Massage" for the terminally ill, disabled or elderly. Caring for the elderly, by touching, gives them a sense that they are still a part of society: that we accept them as they are. Completing "The Cycle of Touch" gives the elderly a place for comfort. The elderly, in turn will accept their bodies in that comfort zone and allow someone to touch it as it is.

Cure is not a goal of palliative care but rather the freedom from pain (daily massage is the ultimate goal). If pain can be controlled, the person can address his/her emotional and spiritual problems. When a person loses control of his/her body, they can become extremely depressed. with the "Power of Touch", the giver and the receiver can exchange a non-verbal communication. Family and friends are often ignorant and fearful about how to ease the suffering of their loved one. With the "Power of Touch" massage, the family can ease the pain to a tolerable level; help with the financial worry of needing professionals and have the opportunity to express their love and concern in a very rewarding manner.
